The 5th Constitutional Convention of 2026

Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands — The Nitijela has officially advanced the legislative framework for the 2026 Constitutional Convention, marking a historic moment in the democratic evolution of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Through the introduction of the Constitutional Convention Act 2026 and related amendment bills, the Nitijela has laid the groundwork for a 45-member convention. This assembly, composed of 33 democratically elected district representatives and 12 traditional leaders, will debate profound changes to the nation’s governance structure.

Among the most highly anticipated discussions is the proposed shift to the direct election of the President by the Marshallese people, alongside the introduction of an electoral vote system and an expansion of the Nitijela’s membership. Furthermore, the Elections and Referenda (Amendment) Act 2026 has been introduced to ensure that qualified public officials and civil servants can actively participate as delegates without jeopardizing their current employment, guaranteeing the convention benefits from our nation’s most experienced voices.
